Repointing (Mortar Repair)
Mortar repair is also known as “repointing” which involves removing and replacing mortar from the joints. This is a delicate process requiring a delicate touch and properly formulated mortar.
Mortar repair becomes necessary when the original mortar is crumbling, has fallen out, or is otherwise deteriorating. If left to continue to degrade, further damage is inevitable as water has a direct route in. Once water seeps in, it infiltrates the bricks causing further decay and additional damage due to freeze/thaw expansions and contractions.
Repointing is not a do-it-yourself job, though folks at the hardware store may say it is. Sure, you could apply off-the-shelf mortar but the finished project will not match the original. We analyze the original mortar and create a recipe to match its characteristics and color. End result: a professional repointing job that blends in with surrounding mortar.
